Futures research is a combination of science and art--digging for relevant data followed by extrapolation and a dose of intuition and foresight.  Therefore it is prudent to seek to identify THREE FUTURES for each topic being studied.  This is best accomplished by developing Standard (Surprise-Free), Pessimistic, and Optimistic SCENARIOS.  The standard scenario envisions the future in the topic area without any major changes in direction (much like trend forecasting).  The pessimistic scenario looks for the perils of new demographics, technology, and systems in the area--what to avoid.  The optimistic scenario looks for the promises of the same changes--what to create through foresight followed by good policy decisions and implementation.
